There's tired...and then there's four hours on your feet speaking to close to four hundred high school students. I was surprised that I could put a sentence together by the end of my time there, but today I spoke at the high school that I graduated from, Sammamish. It was really cool and really strange to be back there as a guest speaker. The high school has changed a lot, and they had me speaking in a new theater that's just beautiful. I was up on stage, under the spotlights, with a microphone. Good thing I got over that 'fear of public speaking' thing a long time ago *g*

I spoke to four different periods, and the students were great. For the most part attentive, and some of them asked good questions. Afterwards I sat in the library and signed books and talked to a cool group of girls and a talented budding poet. I sold 15 books, which is my most yet at a school visit. Whoot! I told everyone to email me and tell me what they think, so we'll see if I get any "I was the girl seated in the back by the guy falling asleep..." I felt kind of bad, though, because I was so tired it was hard for me to talk to them!

Afterwards several of the teachers said 'thank you' for coming and that they really appreciated my visiting the school. It's funny to me to be thanked for doing something that I enjoy...The librarian at the school, Sandy, is the kind of librarian I love - funny, passionate about literature and students, and committed to her work. We really hit it off, I can tell she's someone that I would love working with on literature and teens if I lived in the area.

Yesterday I was at Tillicum, the middle school that I graduated from. It, too, has been remodeled in the meantime (I mean, i has been ten plus years!). It was an afterschool talk, so it was awesome that about thirty students showed up since they didn't have to. They asked a lot of questions (which is always nice) and seemed to enjoy my talk. It is so fun to hear how many of them think of becoming writers themselves. I also liked the librarian there, Robbin, and she was another enthusiastic and wonderful person.

Tomorrow night I'll be at the B&N near Bellevue Square at 6:30pm. Some of the students said they'd be there, so hopefully I won't stand with my books by myself *g* Okay, I'm tired, so it's time to take a break. I have a nephew who wants to play with me....
