Dena's Blog

A daily/weekly/whenever I feel like it blog for fantasy writer Dena Landon

Well, it's been a while (again) since I've udpated. Mainly because I've been practicing waiting. I'm not so good at it, in fact, I suck. I hate waiting, I am not a naturally patient person, and it annoys me to feel as if the universe is conspiring to teach me this virtue. Why is it a virtue for me to be able to put up with other people's slowness? :-P

Anyway, that rant aside, here's what going on in the writing world:

Venetia, now titled Canal Dancer, is on my agent's desk. There shall now be much rejoicing. The word from the betareaders is that it's good, that the plotting, etc., is tight and the characterization sound. So now I just - clears throat - WAIT to hear from my agent, and then WAIT to hear from Dutton (as they have an option to see my next manuscript).

The ghostwriting thing is a 'go.' Contracts are being ironed out, though I still have no idea how much money I'll be receiving. I've started work on the novel and it's proving difficult to work in someone else's world, with someone else's characters. I have not been working on it as much as I should be, however, and I need to get cracking. Recitals and teaching are done so I should have more time.

The article for Dance Spirit has been started, but I am waiting to hear back from all my interview subjects (there's that pesky verb again!). But at least I'm not as panicked that I won't be able to write it. Now, mind you, it's due in two weeks, so I'd really like to get it done in the next few days. We Shall See.

Dance World:

I am auditioning tomorrow for a job teaching up in Bedford, NH. So right now I'm lesson planning and burning CD's. This studio has children start at the barre at age five, which is young, so I'm a little hesitant about that. But it would be six classes, putting me awfully close to the number needed for me to be ok financially next year.

The two-week jazz intensive festival in Boulder, CO, is happening. I'm so excited! I honestly can't wait, even though I'm apprehensive about dancing from 9:30am-7pm five days a week. I did give myself a two hour break in the middle, though, to write, as final line edits of SQ are due around that time.

General Life Stuff:

The houseguest needs to go. Preferably as soon as possible. It's driving me nuts having someone else in my space. I really am a loner, I think. I wonder if I could convince whatever man I marry to live in separate houses? Though that wouldn't solve the problem of what to do with the kids. Unless I made him take them ;-P

My office and house are a mess. And let's not even talk about my car. But my garden is looking much better, I have plots of basil, parsley and dill planted and marked off with rock borders, I now have two new bushes - mountain laurel and azalea - and many new plants, most of them gifts from students. It's almost at the point I'd like it at, then I need to work on the flower bed in front of my house. And the yard. It's all weeds right now.
